Pope Discussed Peace with Zelensky
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday underscored the importance of the “continuation of dialogue” to achieve a “just and lasting peace” during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to a statement from the Vatican, the pontiff welcomed Zelenskyy at his residence in Castel Gandolfo, where they held discussions centered on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“The Holy Father reiterated the need for the continuation of dialogue and expressed his urgent desire that the current diplomatic initiatives bring about a just and lasting peace,” the statement emphasized.
The statement further noted that the leaders also addressed matters concerning prisoners of war and the “need to assure the return of Ukrainian children to their families.”
In a subsequent statement, Zelenskyy expressed that Ukraine "deeply appreciates" Pope Leo and the Vatican's backing, along with the "ongoing humanitarian assistance and the readiness to expand humanitarian missions."
"I informed the Pope about diplomatic efforts with the United States to achieve peace. We discussed further actions and the Vatican’s mediation aimed at returning our children abducted by Russia," Zelenskyy remarked in a post on US social media platform X.
He additionally extended an invitation to the pontiff to visit Ukraine, describing it as a "powerful signal of support for our people."
