Pope Leo XIV Stresses Importance of Dialogue for Ukraine Peace
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV emphasized the critical importance of sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve enduring peace Tuesday during a high-stakes meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Vatican confirmed in an official statement that the pontiff welcomed Zelenskyy at his Castel Gandolfo residence, where discussions centered on the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict.
"The Holy Father reiterated the need for the continuation of dialogue and expressed his urgent desire that the current diplomatic initiatives bring about a just and lasting peace," the statement said.
The talks also addressed prisoner-of-war matters and the "need to assure the return of Ukrainian children to their families," according to the Vatican's announcement.
Zelenskyy subsequently released his own statement expressing that Ukraine "deeply appreciates" Pope Leo and the Vatican's support, as well as the "ongoing humanitarian assistance and the readiness to expand humanitarian missions."
"I informed the Pope about diplomatic efforts with the United States to achieve peace. We discussed further actions and the Vatican's mediation aimed at returning our children abducted by Russia," Zelenskyy said in a statement on US social media company X.
The Ukrainian leader extended an invitation for the pontiff to visit Ukraine, characterizing such a trip as a "powerful signal of support for our people."
Ukrainian media organizations, including state news agency Ukrinform, earlier reported Zelenskyy's arrival in Rome, where he's scheduled to confer with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The diplomatic mission follows Zelenskyy's Monday appearances in London and Brussels, where he engaged European leadership regarding a restructured U.S.-proposed peace framework to terminate the three-and-a-half-year conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.
