Pope stresses dialogue for lasting peace in meeting with Zelensky
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday stressed the importance of continuing dialogue to achieve a “just and lasting peace” during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reports stated.
The Vatican said the talks took place at the pope’s residence in Castel Gandolfo and focused on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. “The Holy Father reiterated the need for the continuation of dialogue and expressed his urgent desire that the current diplomatic initiatives bring about a just and lasting peace,” the Vatican statement said. The discussions also addressed the situation of prisoners of war and the “need to assure the return of Ukrainian children to their families.”
In response, Zelenskyy expressed that Ukraine “deeply appreciates” the support of Pope Leo and the Vatican, highlighting humanitarian aid and the willingness to expand relief missions.
He noted, “I informed the Pope about diplomatic efforts with the United States to achieve peace. We discussed further actions and the Vatican’s mediation aimed at returning our children abducted by Russia.” Zelenskyy also invited the pontiff to visit Ukraine, calling it a “powerful signal of support for our people.”
Zelenskyy arrived in Rome after visits to London and Brussels, where he met with European leaders to discuss a revised US-proposed peace plan aimed at ending the more than three-and-a-half-year conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. He is also scheduled to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his Rome visit.
