Cambodia, Thailand exchange accusations of violating truce deal

(MENAFN) Clashes erupted for a second day along the Thai-Cambodian border on Tuesday, with both governments trading accusations of violating the Oct. 26 ceasefire agreement. Cambodia says at least seven civilians were killed, while Thai authorities report damage to homes from cross-border shelling.

Cambodia’s Defense Ministry confirmed seven deaths and multiple injuries, blaming what it called “aggressive military operations by Thai forces on Cambodian territory.” Ministry spokeswoman Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata accused Bangkok of breaching the ceasefire and the Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Local Cambodian media intensified the alarm, with a media organization reporting that Thai F-16 fighter jets carried out an airstrike on Samrong city in Oddar Meanchey province. Another outlet published images showing smoke rising above a casino building in Thmar Da commune after what it described as heavy Thai artillery fire on Tuesday morning. Anadolu could not independently verify these claims.

Fighting was also reported near Border Post 48 in Ou Chrov district, around 16 kilometers from Poipet city.

The Royal Thai Army, meanwhile, accused Cambodian forces of firing artillery shells into the Ban Khok Thahan area on Monday night, damaging at least two civilian homes. Thai officials have not yet commented on the alleged airstrike.

The renewed clashes come just weeks after both sides agreed to an unconditional ceasefire in July, followed by the October peace pact aimed at halting months of escalating tensions along the volatile frontier.
