Sisi reaffirms backing of Libya’s sovereignty, stability, integrity

(MENAFN) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday reiterated his country’s unwavering commitment to Libya’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity during talks in Cairo with eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar, according to reports.

Haftar attended the meeting alongside his deputy, Saddam Khalifa, and chief of staff Khaled Khalifa, while Egypt’s intelligence chief Hassan Rashad was also present.

A statement from the presidency indicated that Sisi underscored the importance of confronting all forms of foreign interference in Libya and emphasized the necessity of withdrawing foreign forces and mercenaries. The statement further noted that he reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Libya’s unity and stability.

Sisi also reiterated Egypt’s endorsement of all efforts aimed at resolving the Libyan conflict, with particular emphasis on initiatives pushing for concurrent presidential and parliamentary elections.

According to the statement, Haftar expressed gratitude for Egypt’s “pivotal role” and acknowledged Sisi’s personal involvement in bolstering security and stability in Libya. He also recognized Cairo’s ongoing support for the Libyan people throughout the years of turmoil.

The UN mission in Libya continues to work toward steering the country toward national elections as a path out of the deadlock between two competing administrations.

Libya remains split between rival authorities: one headquartered in Tripoli under Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, governing the western region, and another backed by the House of Representatives in Benghazi, led by Osama Hammad, overseeing the east and much of the south.

The presidency’s statement added that Sisi and Haftar also reviewed broader regional developments, with particular focus on the conflict in Sudan. Both sides agreed on the need to intensify regional and international efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution that safeguards Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and stability.
