IFRC Warns Poor Countries Face Climate Crisis
(MENAFN) Painting a stark picture of the global effects of climate change, Caroline Holt, director of Climate, Disaster and Crisis at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), emphasized that Türkiye should bring attention to climate-driven migration and champion the needs of vulnerable populations as it hosts the forthcoming UN climate change summit, COP31.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Doha Forum, Holt stated, “We’re seeing a lot getting more intensified because of climate change. And it’s not just the frequency of those disasters, but actually the intensity.”
She explained that the severity of disasters is increasing, not merely their occurrence.
Holt highlighted that disasters are increasingly overlapping, leaving affected communities with minimal time to recuperate between successive crises. Communities already struggling with climate-related catastrophes frequently face new emergencies before they can fully recover, she noted, adding: "So we're seeing more and more of this type of disaster as well.”
Economic fragility further exacerbates the situation, with the poorest nations typically bearing the brunt of climate impacts.
“People are finding themselves in more economically vulnerable situations. We're finding that those places hit the worst by the climate crisis are most often the more vulnerable countries of the world,” Holt said.
She further pointed out, “Where maybe institutions, political systems, and systems to support the population are not as robust as they could be. So we're seeing more and more disasters as a result of climate change that are undermining the systems and the ability of countries and communities themselves to recover.”
