EU reaffirms backing of Syrian as it marks anniversary of fall of Assad’s

(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa on Monday reaffirmed the European Union’s support for Syria as the country observes one year since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government.

In a message on X, Costa said Syrians are “taking steps toward a more stable and inclusive future,” stressing that the EU remains committed to a peaceful, Syrian-led political track rooted in justice, reconciliation and protection of citizens’ rights.

He underscored the bloc’s ongoing engagement in political dialogue, humanitarian relief and efforts tied to Syria’s stabilization and reconstruction.

Assad fled to Russia last December after nearly 25 years in power, ending the Baath Party’s decades-long rule. A transitional administration under President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January.
