French Foreign Minister Addresses Syria’s Future
(MENAFN) France on Monday conveyed that Syria “can no longer live under fear and arbitrariness,” as Syrians commemorate the first anniversary of the downfall of the Bashar Assad government.
The message reflected a broader international sentiment urging lasting change after a turbulent era.
In a statement posted on the US social platform X, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot recalled the significance of the past year, writing: "A year ago, Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime collapsed. The hell of the Sednaya prison came to an end. This moment must remain a point of no return. Syria can no longer live under fear and arbitrariness."
His remarks underscored the need to ensure that the country’s progress is preserved.
Barrot also emphasized the importance of accountability for victims and stability for the Syrian people, calling for justice and genuine safety across the nation.
Assad, who had ruled Syria for nearly a quarter of a century, escaped to Russia last December, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s decades-long dominance, which had persisted since 1963.
