(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))

KUWAIT, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Dive Team (KDT), affiliated with the Environmental Voluntary Foundation (EVF), took part in cleanup of Al-Zor beaches removing tons of plastic, wood waste and discarded nets littering the seabed.
The team's chief, Walid Al-Fadhel, indicated to KUNA that the activity coindied with the International Volunteer Day that falls on December 5.
"Every contribution matters" is the logo of this year's occasion, he said, indicating that the theme was intended to boost group action.
The annual occasion, he continued, was proclaimed by the UN in 1985 to honor volunteers and promote public awareness of their role.
Plastic waste is hazardous to the ecosystem and the marine creatures, Al-Fadhel said, alluding to a UN report that affirms that plastic waste causes death of millions birds around the world a year, in addition to killing one million marine creatures including turtles.
The team will continue with its tasks, removing abandoned boats and fishing nets entangled with the coral reefs, he said.
They will also continue launching campaigns to preserve the environment, he said.
The Dive Team had set up a pavilion within the recently organized International Kuwait Book Fair. (end)
