Lula seeks US help to catch Brazilian criminals in Miami
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has proposed working with the United States to apprehend leaders of Brazilian criminal organizations living in the country, particularly in Miami.
As stated by reports, Lula spoke on a private television channel about his recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that he offered collaboration to capture and detain Brazilian crime bosses residing in Miami. He added that he suggested starting with Brazilians living in the U.S. who are actively involved in criminal activities.
Lula emphasized the need for regional coordination against gang leaders and traffickers involved in arms and drug smuggling. Referring to recent U.S. operations in the Caribbean, which have reportedly resulted in at least 83 deaths since September, he told Trump that combating trafficking does not require weapons but rather intelligence and strategic tactics.
During the 40-minute conversation, Trump expressed his willingness to cooperate with Brazil and promised full support for joint initiatives targeting criminal organizations. The leaders also discussed trade matters, including Washington’s 40% additional tariffs on certain Brazilian products. Lula described the discussion as “very productive” and welcomed the U.S. decision to remove the extra tariffs, calling it “very positive.”
The call also reflected a thaw in tensions following a trade dispute. Trump had initially imposed the tariffs citing concerns over what he viewed as unfair trade practices and the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was recently sentenced to over 27 years in prison for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula.
