(MENAFN) Former EU foreign policy head Federica Mogherini has been released after authorities formally notified her of allegations in an ongoing inquiry into suspected misconduct connected to EU-financed training programs for junior diplomats, according to general reports from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).

Acting on EPPO’s request in Brussels, the Belgian Federal Judicial Police detained Mogherini on Tuesday, along with a senior figure from the College of Europe in Bruges and a high-ranking official within the European Commission. After being questioned, the individuals were officially apprised of the accusations, which relate to suspected procurement fraud, corruption, conflicts of interest, and breaches of professional confidentiality, according to statements.

All three were freed following their detention, as authorities determined they did not present a flight risk.

EPPO emphasized that the inquiry remains active and that additional information cannot be disclosed at this stage to protect the integrity of the proceedings. It also reiterated that everyone involved is presumed innocent until a court in Belgium reaches a final judgment.

EPPO functions as an independent prosecutorial body within the EU, tasked with investigating and bringing to trial offenses that threaten the financial interests of the bloc.
