Sudanese forces regain control of Mabsut town in South Kordofan

(MENAFN) The Sudanese military regained control of the town of Mabsut in South Kordofan state on Tuesday following confrontations with forces aligned with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to reports.

Witnesses stated that army units established dominance over Mabsut, located west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali, after clashes with fighters from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N). With this advance, the military now controls all territories west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali.

Videos circulated on social media by army personnel reportedly showing the town’s takeover, though no official statements have yet been issued by either the Sudanese army or SPLM-N.

Al-Abbasiya Tagali holds strategic significance as it connects the northern and southern parts of South Kordofan, granting the army control over critical routes affecting troop movements and civilian travel.

This follows a previous military advance on Sunday, when Sudanese forces captured additional areas west of Al-Abbasiya Tagali after clashes with the RSF. Currently, the RSF maintains control over all five Darfur states, while the army governs the majority of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.

The ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in at least 40,000 deaths and displaced around 12 million people, according to international health reports.
