US envoy holds discussions with Israeli officials on Lebanon issues

(MENAFN) US Special Envoy to Lebanon, Morgan Ortagus, met with Israeli officials on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing situation in Lebanon.

“We had a good discussion on the situation in Lebanon,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated on a social media platform. He emphasized that Hezbollah, not Israel, is undermining Lebanon’s sovereignty. Saar added, “Disarming the group is crucial for Lebanon's future and Israel's security,” and highlighted the importance of ongoing collaboration by noting, “The US is our greatest ally, and we'll continue our close cooperation.”

Reports indicate that Ortagus, who also serves as a senior adviser to the US mission to the UN, held additional meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz. While the details of these discussions were not disclosed, local media suggest that Israel may resume airstrikes in Lebanon following a three-day pause during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the country.

The pontiff departed Lebanon on Tuesday evening after a series of engagements combining spiritual and official activities, which included solidarity tours and messages advocating for peace. During his visit, the pope also called for a halt to hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.
