Christian Freuding Says Pentagon Reduced Communication with Germany

(MENAFN) Communications between the Pentagon and the German Defense Ministry have significantly diminished, according to a report by a media outlet, which referenced remarks by German Lieutenant General Christian Freuding.

After years during which German officials could reach their American counterparts “day and night,” Freuding — formerly responsible for the German Defense Ministry’s Ukraine unit and recently appointed as the next chief of the army — explained that channels of interaction have now been “cut off, really cut off.”

Illustrating the shift, Freuding recounted that when the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump suddenly suspended weapon deliveries to Ukraine earlier this year, Berlin was given no advance notice.

He added that he currently depends on diplomats in Washington to “find somebody in the Pentagon” to obtain even fundamental updates regarding U.S. policy.

His observations come at a time when Washington is scaling back its direct role in the Ukraine conflict and across Europe more broadly, encouraging NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for their own defense.

Although Freuding voiced unease about the United States reducing its engagement on the continent, Germany has pressed ahead with its military buildup.

Berlin is boosting weapons manufacturing, speeding up acquisition processes, and authorizing long-term borrowing to reinforce its militarization strategy.

German leaders have remained determined to transform the Bundeswehr into Europe’s most formidable conventional force by 2029, echoing alerts from Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and other leading figures who argue that Russia might strike NATO within the next several years.
