UN Warns of Dire Conditions in Gaza as Winter Arrives
(MENAFN) UN officials warned Tuesday that humanitarian conditions across the Gaza Strip continue deteriorating as winter arrives, with escalating violence hindering aid operations while displacement surges throughout Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric informed journalists that the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) alongside partner organizations are intensifying relief distribution to civilians—especially minors—who have "suffered immensely" throughout the preceding two years.
Over the past 60 days, Dujarric reported, humanitarian partners have delivered tens of thousands of essential cold-weather supplies—including footwear, garments, blankets and towels—to children throughout the territory.
"And during the last 10 days of November, 160 activity tents were distributed, enabling thousands of children to access mental health and psychosocial support activities and case management services," he stated.
Addressing medical emergencies, Dujarric disclosed that a World Health Organization (WHO) team orchestrated the medical evacuation of 18 patients alongside 54 companions from Gaza for overseas treatment.
"WHO said that more than 16,500 patients still need life-saving care outside of the Gaza Strip.
"We continue to call for the opening of all available border crossings and corridors – including so that patients can seek treatment in the West Bank – and stress the need for unimpeded access for international emergency medical teams to enter Gaza," he emphasized.
"Over the past 24 hours, we've continued also to receive reports of air strikes, shelling and gunfire in all five governorates of the Gaza Strip."
Regarding the West Bank, Dujarric noted the UN "remain concerned" about consequences stemming from Israeli military operations in the northern governorates of Tubas and Jenin conducted recently amid accounts of forced displacement, heightened insecurity, water infrastructure destruction and multiple commercial facility closures.
Within just the last 48 hours, nearly two dozen Palestinian families have been forcibly displaced from residences subsequently converted into military observation posts, he confirmed.
