Israel raids southern Syria despite US warning
(MENAFN) Israeli military forces carried out a cross-border raid into southern Syria on Tuesday, targeting and destroying an abandoned military outpost, despite US President Donald Trump urging restraint in the region.
According to state-run reports, two Israeli tanks and ten military vehicles entered the village of Samdaniya al-Sharqiya in the southern Quneitra countryside. There was no immediate statement from either the Israeli army or Syrian authorities regarding the operation.
The latest incursion occurred a day after Israeli forces raided two other villages in Quneitra on Monday, continuing a pattern of near-daily attacks in southern Syria over the past several months.
Trump had previously called for caution in the region, stating: “It is very important that Israel maintain a strong and true dialogue with Syria, and that nothing takes place that will interfere with Syria’s evolution into a prosperous state.” He also praised Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, noting that he is “working diligently” to ensure that ‘good things happen’ for both countries” and describing the situation as “a historic opportunity ... for peace in the Middle East.”
Syrian government records indicate that since December 2024, Israel has conducted over 1,000 airstrikes and more than 400 cross-border raids in southern Syrian provinces. Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024, Israel expanded its occupation of the Golan Heights by taking control of the demilitarized buffer zone, a move in violation of a 1974 agreement with Syria.
