Kremlin Condemns Ukraine’s Strikes on Black Sea Tankers
(MENAFN) The Kremlin has labeled Ukraine’s recent attacks on commercial tankers in the Black Sea as an “outrageous” breach of Turkish sovereignty, according to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
These remarks come after several assaults involving explosives-laden sea drones targeted two Gambian-flagged tankers, Kairos and Virat, which were navigating near the Turkish coastline en route to the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
On Saturday, another drone struck a crude oil hub on Russia’s Black Sea shore, operated by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), a partnership including Russia, Kazakhstan, the US, and several Western European nations.
Speaking with journalists on Monday, Peskov emphasized that the attacks on the tankers constituted a direct infringement on the rights of the vessels’ owners and an intrusion on the sovereignty of the Turkish republic.
He noted that the Kremlin considers the incidents to be serious and cautioned that such assaults could affect ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
Peskov also stated that the attacks revealed “the essence of the Kiev regime,” highlighting that targeting international energy infrastructure undermines commercial property and maritime security.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had similarly denounced Kiev for the “terrorist attacks” on global civilian energy assets.
She suggested that the strikes might be part of an effort by Kiev to hinder international peace efforts, distract from a significant corruption scandal involving top officials, and compensate for Ukraine’s ongoing military setbacks.
