(MENAFN) India has instructed smartphone manufacturers to embed a cybersecurity application on devices that cannot be removed, aiming to address a rise in hacking incidents and digital crimes.

Authorities in New Delhi believe that installing the Sanchar Saathi app will enhance mobile cybersecurity and stop tampering or impersonation of the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, as reported by a media outlet.

This unique number is used internationally to trace devices and block stolen equipment from accessing networks.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) emphasized in a notice: “Ensure that the pre-installed Sanchar Saathi application is readily visible and accessible to the end users at the time of first use or device setup and that its functionalities are not disabled or restricted.”

The DoT order directs smartphone companies to ensure that all devices manufactured or imported into India include the app within 90 days from November 28.

For devices already produced, the Indian government expects manufacturers to distribute the app via a software update, according to a news agency.

Sanchar Saathi is designed to offer citizen-focused services through both its mobile application and online portal.

According to its website, the app has blocked 4.2 million stolen devices and facilitated the recovery of 2.6 million handsets.
