(MENAFN) According to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized Honduras’ election authorities on Monday, cautioning that the country could face serious repercussions if officials are “trying to change the results” of the Nov. 30 presidential race. On his social media platform, he declared: "Looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential Election. If they do, there will be hell to pay!"

These comments followed statements from the head of Honduras’ National Electoral Council, who indicated that early tallies suggested the two top contenders—right-wing politician Nasry Asfura and television figure Salvador Nasralla—were in what she described as a "technical tie.”

At that stage, Asfura reportedly held a razor-thin margin of just 515 votes.

Trump also accused the election body of pausing the count prematurely, stating: "Their tally was stopped when only 47 percent of the Vote was counted. It is imperative that the Commission finish counting the Votes.

"Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans must have their Votes counted. Democracy must prevail!"

Reports noted that Trump recently endorsed Asfura, the candidate of the conservative National Party, and vowed support for former President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
