Days ahead may be pivotal for diplomatic efforts on Ukraine— EU chief

(MENAFN) EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday described the coming days as potentially "pivotal" for Ukraine diplomacy, following “difficult but productive” talks in the US on a possible peace agreement.

Ahead of an EU defense ministers' meeting in Brussels, Kallas said discussions would focus on strengthening aid to Ukraine and enhancing the bloc's defense readiness. She stressed the need to bolster Ukraine’s defenses as Moscow shows no signs of seeking peace.

“It is clear that Russia does not want peace, and therefore we need to make Ukraine as strong as possible for them to stand up for themselves,” Kallas said.

The talks in Florida on Sunday, attended by US and Ukrainian officials, centered on potential de facto borders with Russia. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the session “productive” and “successful.”

Kallas emphasized that while the EU supports Ukraine, the burden of defense ultimately rests with Kyiv. “Ukrainians are there alone… But I trust that Ukraine will stand up for themselves,” she said.
