U.S. Envoy Witkoff Set to Hold Talks with Putin in Moscow
(MENAFN) US special envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Moscow on Monday for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a peace framework to terminate the war in Ukraine, an American official confirmed to media.
The diplomatic mission follows apparent progress in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, as the White House advances a peace initiative designed to conclude the conflict now approaching its fourth year.
On Sunday, Witkoff, instrumental in negotiating a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, convened in Florida with Ukrainian negotiators alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio and senior advisor Jared Kushner.
Rubio described the talks as "very productive." In a statement, he emphasized that the objective is "not just the end of the war."
"Obviously, that's essential and fundamental. We want to see the end of the killing and the death and the suffering, and I'm sure the Ukrainian side, I know they do as well," Rubio said.
"They want peace. But it's also about securing an end to the war that leaves Ukraine sovereign and independent and with an opportunity at real prosperity," he added.
The high-stakes Moscow meeting represents a critical juncture in diplomatic efforts to resolve the devastating conflict that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions across Eastern Europe.
