(MENAFN) Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul publicly apologized on Sunday for the government's failure to adequately protect communities severely impacted by the recent floods, which have claimed more than 160 lives. During a recent field visit to flood-affected areas, Anutin expressed regret to the residents he met, acknowledging the state's shortcomings in responding to the disaster.

The prime minister emphasized the need for "stricter" evacuation measures and assured that the government would conduct thorough assessments to prepare a comprehensive aid package for those affected. This includes soft loans and financial support for residents. Anutin also planned to visit the hardest-hit Hat Yai district in Songkhla province on Sunday to further evaluate the situation.

As of Saturday, the official death toll from the floods reached 162, with 126 of those fatalities reported in Songkhla. More than 1 million households across Thailand have been impacted by the floods, which have been described as the worst in 25 years. Thousands of people were trapped in their homes earlier in the week as floodwaters inundated large parts of the country.
