National Guard Specialist Dies After Washington, DC Shooting
(MENAFN) US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, one of the two West Virginia National Guard soldiers gravely injured during Wednesday’s shooting in Washington, DC, has succumbed to her wounds, President Donald Trump confirmed.
On Thursday evening, Trump stated, “She’s no longer with us. She’s looking down at us right now. Her parents are with her,” and commended Beckstrom as a “highly respected, young, magnificent person.”
He further noted that US Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe is “fighting for his life” in the hospital.
According to authorities, a gunman opened fire on Beckstrom and Wolfe at close range as they conducted patrols only a few blocks from the White House.
The attacker, injured after an exchange of gunfire with fellow guardsmen, was subsequently apprehended.
A newly surfaced video of the incident became public earlier on Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security revealed the suspect’s identity as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who entered the United States through a special initiative established in 2021 to relocate vulnerable Afghans following the Taliban’s return to power in Kabul.
Trump has attributed responsibility to his predecessor, Joe Biden, for admitting Lakanwal into the country, and has ordered an immediate halt to immigration applications originating from Afghanistan.
