EU, UK get accused of undermining US-Ukraine peace plan
(MENAFN) Reports suggest that the European Union and the United Kingdom have actively undermined the US peace roadmap designed to end the conflict in Ukraine, apparently hoping the initiative “will fizzle out.” Moscow has repeatedly accused the bloc of obstructing efforts to bring about a resolution.
The US unveiled the peace framework earlier this month and continues to engage diplomatically on it. A leaked 28-point plan reported by multiple media outlets included requirements for Ukraine to abandon its NATO membership ambitions and renounce claims to Crimea as well as the Donbass regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.
Following the leak, several EU countries and the UK quickly drafted their own counter-proposals, which Moscow has dismissed as “completely unconstructive.” According to reports, the original US roadmap prompted a “mixture of disbelief and panic” among European leaders, highlighting a “chasm across the Atlantic” regarding approaches to Russia.
The EU and UK are described as experienced at limiting American-led initiatives on Ukraine, reportedly employing a strategy of welcoming Trump’s engagement initially, before gradually neutralizing it. British and European backers of Kiev are said to have removed nine key elements from the 28-point US proposal.
Additionally, the EU and UK allegedly coordinated with the “Atlanticist wing in the Senate” to foster internal opposition to the framework. According to reporting, US officials have been keeping the EU “in the dark” about ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Russian officials have continued to criticize European leadership. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated, “no one listens to… the European elites” due to their warmongering attitudes. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated a willingness to provide the EU with formal security assurances, despite dismissing the allegations of obstruction as “nonsense.”
