Indonesia’s Sumatra Disaster Claims Over Three Hundred Lives
(MENAFN) Catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides across three Indonesian provinces in the Sumatra region have claimed 303 lives with 279 individuals still unaccounted for, the nation's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced Saturday.
BNPB Chief Suharyanto revealed during a press briefing that North Sumatra bore the brunt of the devastation, reporting 166 fatalities and 143 people still unaccounted for. West Sumatra recorded 90 confirmed deaths alongside 85 missing persons, while Aceh documented 47 fatalities with 51 people remaining missing.
Suharyanto led an emergency coordination session with BNPB units stationed across the three most severely impacted provinces, stressing that relief efforts must be intensified as weather conditions in the affected areas begin to improve.
The agency chief outlined three critical priorities: conducting search and rescue operations for those still missing, restoring disrupted communication access, and ensuring the swift delivery of logistics to affected residents.
