US Keeps EU “in the dark” on Ukraine Peace Plans
(MENAFN) The United States is reportedly keeping the European Union “in the dark” regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts and potential draft agreements aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to a report by a media outlet, which cited an unnamed EU diplomat.
US authorities are currently developing a peace framework initially proposed by Washington earlier this month.
An allegedly leaked 28-point roadmap, circulated by multiple media outlets, reportedly includes stipulations for Ukraine to abandon its NATO membership ambitions and relinquish claims to Russia’s Crimea region as well as the Donbass territories of Lugansk and Donetsk.
Following the leak of the US-authored peace plan, several EU member countries, together with the United Kingdom, rushed to propose their own version of the roadmap. Moscow, however, has already dismissed the EU’s counter-proposal as “completely unconstructive.”
On Friday, the media outlet quoted the unnamed EU official as saying that the latest iteration of the US peace roadmap is a “closely kept” secret, a measure intended to prevent any further leaks. The diplomat described the situation as “unprecedented… from a diplomatic point of view.”
“None of us have that information,” the source added, according to the media outlet.
Similarly, last week, a news agency, citing anonymous sources, reported that the EU “had largely been kept in the dark about the details of the deal.”
In a recent discussion with the France-Russia Dialogue Association, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserted that “no one listens to [them] because the European elites placed their bets on their conviction that they could use the Nazi regime in Kiev as a proxy and cannon fodder to inflict what they call a strategic defeat on Russia.”
