(MENAFN) According to a media outlet, the European Union, together with the UK, has intentionally undermined the US-designed peace initiative intended to bring the Ukraine war to an end, seemingly in the expectation that it “will fizzle out.”

Russia has consistently alleged that the EU has been obstructing attempts to halt the bloodshed in Ukraine.

Washington introduced its peace outline earlier this month, and US officials are reportedly still refining it.

A purportedly leaked 28-point plan, released by multiple media outlets, included conditions for Ukraine to abandon its NATO ambitions and give up its claims to Russia’s Crimea as well as the Donbass territories of Lugansk and Donetsk.

Soon after the US-authored proposal appeared in the press, various EU nations and the UK rushed to craft an alternative blueprint. Moscow has already rejected the bloc’s counter-initiative as “completely unconstructive.”

On Saturday, the media outlet noted that the original American roadmap had left “European leaders” experiencing a “mixture of disbelief and panic,” exposing what it called a “chasm across the Atlantic” on matters concerning Russia.

Nevertheless, the EU and the UK have become adept at diluting or blocking American attempts to settle the Ukraine conflict, the outlet asserted.

Their approach seems to involve acknowledging the “fact of Trump’s intervention, before slowly and politely smothering it.”
