China Launches Nationwide Fire Safety Inspection Following Hong Kong's Deadly Blaze
China has launched a nationwide fire safety inspection campaign for high-rise buildings following a deadly blaze in Hong Kong that killed at least 128 people.
The Ministry of Emergency Management said on Saturday that the campaign will focus on buildings undergoing external wall renovations and interior modifications. Inspections will target four key areas: flammable materials in external wall insulation systems, banned construction materials such as bamboo scaffolding, fire safety equipment, and emergency evacuation routes.

The move comes in the wake of Hong Kong's deadliest fire in decades The blaze, which broke out on Wednesday November 26, 2025 afternoon at an eight-tower estate housing more than 4,600 residents, spread rapidly across buildings wrapped in bamboo scaffolding and green mesh. Firefighting operations have ended, with 128 confirmed dead, around 200 still missing, and 79 injured. Twelve firefighters were also hurt, one in serious condition.
Authorities have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter over the fire from the construction company - two directors and one engineering consultant, Hong Kong police superintendent Eileen Chung confirmed.
