Israel doesn’t authorise EU commissioner to enter Gaza

(MENAFN) EU Commissioner for Equality and Acting Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib said Friday that she had hoped to cross into the Gaza Strip during her visit to Egypt, but Israel did not authorize the trip.

Lahbib stressed that Palestinians continue to be killed every day in Gaza, noting that two children die daily on average. Since the beginning of the current ceasefire, she said, 347 Palestinians have been killed, including 67 children.

She explained that she intended to enter Gaza to witness the humanitarian situation “firsthand,” and said Israel’s refusal to permit the visit “deeply saddened us.”

Lahbib described Gaza as a graveyard for thousands of people, including humanitarian workers. She said roughly 600 aid workers who were trying to save lives have been killed, making Gaza “the most dangerous place in the world.”

With winter approaching, Lahbib warned that Palestinians have nowhere safe to go and no means to keep warm, citing experts who predict the season will be “disastrous.”

She reiterated that the ceasefire must hold, stressing that protecting civilians requires full adherence to the agreement and respect for international law.

Lahbib added that it is essential to move from the first stage of the phased ceasefire to the second, which includes disarming Hamas and securing the release of the remaining hostages.

While she acknowledged that humanitarian assistance has begun reaching people, she emphasized that it represents only a small fraction of what is needed. Lahbib called on Israel to allow NGOs to operate freely and urged quicker procedures to facilitate aid.
