Kyrgyzstan Hosts CSTO Summit with Broad Regional Participation
(MENAFN) Kyrgyzstan convened a leaders’ summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) on Thursday in its capital, Bishkek.
The military alliance organized both narrow and expanded sessions of its Collective Security Council, attended by nearly all heads of state of its member countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, who had arrived in Bishkek on Tuesday for a three-day state visit.
Armenia was the only country absent from the summit, having announced in 2024 that it would suspend its participation in CSTO activities due to dissatisfaction with the alliance's handling of its security concerns.
Prior to the main session of the Collective Security Council, CSTO member states held a separate meeting involving foreign ministers, defense ministers, and secretaries of security councils.
At the conclusion of the summit, CSTO members signed 16 documents, including a Collective Security Council declaration and a statement focused on combating drug trafficking, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.
The summit was conducted under Kyrgyzstan’s current chairmanship of the organization, with Russia scheduled to take over as chair starting January 1, 2026.
Established in 2002, the CSTO is a military alliance comprising Russia and former Soviet republics Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
