U.S. Halts Afghan Immigration Processing

(MENAFN) The United States has paused the handling of all immigration applications submitted by Afghan citizens after authorities identified an Afghan asylum seeker as the alleged perpetrator in the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, DC.

This action followed a statement from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who asserted that the suspect was “an Afghan national who was one of the many unvetted, mass-paroled into the United States under Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021, under the Biden administration.”

Earlier, various media sources reported that the individual suspected of carrying out the ambush-style attack—said to have left two guardsmen critically injured—is Rahmanullah Lakanwal.

He reportedly arrived in the U.S. in 2021 and obtained asylum earlier this year.

On Wednesday evening, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) declared that it has “stopped processing all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals indefinitely, pending further review of security and vetting protocols.”

This marks a significant suspension of immigration procedures connected to Afghan applicants.

Former President Donald Trump commented that the suspect “was flown in” during President Joe Biden’s tenure, under Operation Allies Welcome (OAW), which had accelerated the evacuation of Afghans after the Taliban seized control of the country in August 2021.

Trump added, “We must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country.”
