South African Authorities Detain 13 Amid G20 Summit Security Incidents
(MENAFN) South African law enforcement apprehended 13 individuals in Gauteng following 14 reported occurrences during the recent G20 Summit in Johannesburg, which included aggressive demonstrations and thefts targeting global delegates.
This update was shared during a post-G20 summit press conference on Monday, November 25, led by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi in Johannesburg.
He was accompanied by several Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs).
The summit, hosted over the weekend, took place from November 22 to 23 at the Nasrec Expo Centre. Lesufi noted that multiple disruptions and criminal acts were documented during the gathering.
“You all know, South Africans being South Africans, there was no way that we would not have problems,” he remarked.
He continued, “We can report the following disturbing incidents that happened in our province during this period under review.”
One of the incidents involved the theft of cell phones and luggage from delegates representing Vietnam at Checkers Sandton City Mall, leading to the immediate arrest of four suspects.
Additionally, at DaVinci Hotel, authorities detained one individual for possessing a firearm without proper authorisation.
At Mercure Hotel in Ferndale, police probed the theft of a firearm from a SAPS officer, along with the possession of ammunition and negligent loss of a firearm. Two suspects were arrested in connection with these events.
