Dominican Republic Permits US Limited Access for Anti-Drug Operations

(MENAFN) The Dominican Republic has granted the United States permission to utilize its territory "for a limited time" to fight drug trafficking across the Caribbean, President Luis Abinader announced on Wednesday.

Abinader explained, "We have authorized the US, for a limited time, to use restricted areas at San Isidro Air Base and Las Americas International Airport for the logistical operation of refueling aircraft, transport of equipment and technical personnel."

He made the statement during a press briefing alongside US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who was visiting the capital, Santo Domingo.

This development comes after multiple Pentagon missions targeting vessels allegedly involved in smuggling narcotics in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.

Since September, US forces have conducted over 20 strikes, reportedly causing at least 83 fatalities.

Abinader emphasized, "The purpose is clear: to strengthen the air and sea protection ring maintained by our armed forces, a decisive reinforcement to prevent the entry of narcotics and to deliver a more forceful blow against transnational organized crime."

Later addressing reporters, Hegseth stated that the US intends to target "narco-terrorists."

He added, "Our borders will be secure, whether it's the Dominican Republic or the United States of America, and we look forward to working with our partners to make it happen."

Hegseth also noted that President Donald Trump is "serious" about combating drug traffickers attempting to smuggle narcotics into the US.
