Algeria, Egypt ink wide-ranging cooperation deals

(MENAFN) According to official statements, Algeria and Egypt on Wednesday concluded the ninth session of the Algerian-Egyptian High Joint Committee in Cairo by signing 18 agreements, memorandums, and cooperation programs spanning a wide range of fields.

The Algerian government said the ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb alongside Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The newly approved agreements cover areas such as interior affairs, finance, trade, industry, energy, housing, higher education, scientific research, youth, sports, culture, and social solidarity.

Additional memorandums were finalized on accreditation, agricultural research, archiving, consumer rights, and local development. The two sides also adopted a joint accord focused on energy transition and renewable energy. Executive programs related to culture, youth, sports, social affairs, and vocational training were also endorsed, along with a protocol for cooperation in public administration.

Earlier in the day, both prime ministers held one-on-one discussions that later expanded to include their wider delegations before the committee’s formal opening. During these consultations, Ghrieb emphasized the importance of deepening Algerian-Egyptian coordination to safeguard shared interests in the global gas market, noting that evolving international dynamics have made energy a core strategic issue.

Data from Algeria shows that trade with Egypt surpassed $1 billion in 2024, up from $872 million the previous year—an increase of 18%. Both states have set a target of boosting bilateral trade to $5 billion in the near future.

Regarding investment, the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion reported that 21 Egyptian-led projects have been registered since 2023, including 12 ventures carried out jointly with Algerian partners. The agency’s director, Omar Rekkache, highlighted the “successful experiences” of Egyptian firms operating in the country during a meeting of the joint technical committee on investment. Official figures place Egyptian investment in Algeria at more than $3 billion.

This latest committee session follows eight previous rounds, the most recent of which took place in mid-2022 in Algiers, where both sides also endorsed various agreements and memorandums.
