Scottish podcasters get charged over alleged support for banned group

(MENAFN) According to reports, two well-known Scottish pro-independence commentators have been taken into custody and accused of terrorism-related offences after voicing support for Palestine Action, a protest movement the UK government officially banned earlier this year.

The two men — David McGuiness and David Milligan, widely recognized online as The Two Davies — were reportedly detained under the UK Terrorism Act 2000. Police Scotland confirmed that the pair, aged 58 and 68, were arrested “for showing support for a proscribed organization,” noting that a case file will be passed to the Procurator Fiscal, who determines whether charges will proceed.

The allegations are believed to stem from a video in which they criticized the UK’s decision to classify Palestine Action as a terrorist group, a designation that took effect on July 5.

In a Facebook recording, McGuiness recounted being detained at home early in the morning.

“The serious crime squad came to my front door and arrested me under section one of the Criminal Justice Act Scotland, where I was taken to Motherwell Police station, where I was then charged under section 12 of the UK Terrorism Act,” he said. “So, we went from being an extremist to being a bloody terrorist.”

He added that Milligan was also being processed by police, stating: “I believe that my colleague and co-presenter Mr. Milligan is in Clydebank cop shop right now, where he is also being charged under the Terrorism Act.”

McGuiness noted that he was later freed with “no restrictions,” saying: “So folks, I guess I'm now on the watch list officially.”

Their arrests happen amid a period in which several pro-Palestine activists in Scotland—who faced charges earlier this year—have recently been offered police warnings rather than prosecution, a development some campaigners have openly opposed.

Meanwhile, a legal effort challenging the UK government’s proscription of Palestine Action is still before the High Court.
