South Korea indicts anti-corruption Chief over Marine’s death
(MENAFN) Oh Dong-woon, head of South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), was indicted on Wednesday without detention on charges of dereliction of duty linked to the 2023 death of Marine Cpl. Chae Su-geun, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Oh is accused of failing to notify the Supreme Prosecutors Office for about a year after one of the agency’s prosecutors became subject to a criminal complaint, as legally required. The indictment comes as the special counsel team, led by Lee Myeong-hyeon, expands its investigation into alleged interference by former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration in the military probe surrounding Chae’s death.
Last week, Yoon himself was indicted for allegedly meddling in the investigation. Ten others have also been charged, including former spy chief Cho Tae-yong and former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup, who was appointed ambassador to Australia by Yoon in March 2024, for their alleged involvement in the case under Yoon’s instructions.
Chae drowned in July 2023 while searching for flood victims in Yecheon County after being swept away by strong currents.
