Dutch Parties D66, CDA Prioritize Finances, Investment

(MENAFN) Dutch political parties D66 and the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) concentrated on financial matters, socio-economic policies, and the business environment on Monday as coalition formation discussions resumed under informateur Sybrand Buma.

D66 leader Rob Jetten and CDA leader Henri Bontenbal emphasized their desire for clarity regarding budget regulations and long-term investment objectives before establishing a unified policy framework, a national news broadcaster reported.

Currently negotiating without additional partners, the two parties aim to complete a preliminary version of their coalition agreement within the next two weeks.

Prior to the discussions, Jetten remarked that the country requires a more robust investment climate but also needs solutions for how to “foot the bill” for substantial spending commitments.

Bontenbal highlighted that the present Dutch budgeting system inadequately separates consumption from investment.

He argued that structural investments should not be treated like everyday expenditures.

“You lose one, and you gain from the other. So you really want to make a distinction,” he said, suggesting that the upcoming government should consider revising fiscal rules to better align with long-term economic goals.

Monday’s negotiations included several prominent figures, such as Laura van Geest, chair of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM); Kim Putters, head of the Social and Economic Council (SER); Ingrid Thijssen, president of employers’ organization VNO-NCW; and Dick Koerselman of trade union FNV.
