Syria states ISIS-tied terror cell get arrested ahead of attacks
(MENAFN) Syrian officials announced that members of an ISIS-affiliated terror cell were detained and neutralized before they could carry out planned attacks in the country’s coastal region.
Brigadier General Abdulaziz Hilal al-Ahmad, who leads internal security in Latakia, said Monday evening that the operation targeted the group in “a precise security operation in the Badrousieh area in the northern Latakia countryside,” according to reports.
Ahmad confirmed that the cell had intentions to execute terrorist acts along Syria’s coastline.
He stated, “Two cell members were killed while the rest were arrested” following confrontations between security forces and the ISIS operatives, though the total number of detainees was not disclosed.
The clashes also left an intelligence officer critically injured, Ahmad added. During the operation, authorities confiscated a stockpile of weapons and ammunition.
Since the removal of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Syria’s new administration has implemented multiple measures aimed at restoring security, pursuing political and economic reforms, fostering social cohesion, and expanding collaboration with regional and international partners.
Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in December, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s rule that had lasted since 1963. In January, a transitional government under President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established.
