US Justice Department Seeks Releasing Epstein, Maxwell Grand Jury Files

(MENAFN) The US Justice Department has requested that two judges in the Southern District of New York approve the publication of grand jury documents and exhibits from the cases involving the late disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

This request comes ahead of a 30-day deadline for making the Epstein files public.

Attorney Jay Clayton, appointed by US Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Democrats linked to Epstein, submitted a motion urging the judges in the Epstein and Maxwell prosecutions to permit the release of redacted grand jury materials, as reported by a news agency.

The motion stated, "In the light of the (Epstein Files Transparency) Act’s clear mandate, the Court should authorize the Department of Justice to release the grand jury transcripts and exhibits and modify any preexisting protective orders that would otherwise prevent public disclosure by the Government of materials the disclosure of which is required by the Act.”

The legislation was recently enacted into law by President Donald Trump.

Epstein died in his New York City jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial.

Previously, he had pleaded guilty and was convicted in 2008 for procuring a minor for prostitution.

Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 on charges for recruiting girls, some as young as 14, for Epstein.

She received a 20-year federal prison sentence in June 2022. In October of this year, the US Supreme Court denied Maxwell’s request to overturn her conviction on charges connected to grooming young girls for Epstein.
