Confusion Emerges Over X’s Location Feature for MAGA Accounts

(MENAFN) A tool from US social media platform X, designed to reveal user locations, sparked online bewilderment after several accounts supporting US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement appeared to operate from outside the United States, a news agency reported on Monday.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, had hinted at the feature last month, describing it as a way for users to confirm content credibility and reduce the reach of troll farms, which frequently manage political accounts from countries other than those they target.

After the feature was activated, users quickly noticed that numerous high-traffic “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) accounts, which claim to represent patriotic Americans, were actually based overseas in places such as Eastern Europe, Thailand, Nigeria, and Bangladesh.

Some users also alleged that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) account appeared to be located in Israel.

X users posted images and videos showing the location field as “Tel Aviv, Israel.” The platform removed the account location function on Friday night.

On Sunday, both the DHS and Bier dismissed these assertions, labeling them as false information.

“I can’t believe we have to say this, but this account has only ever been run and operated from the United States,” DHS stated. “Screenshots are easy to forge, videos are easy to manipulate. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
