Ukraine Weighs US Proposal Amid Fears of Losing Support
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has indicated that the nation must prepare for a difficult decision: either accept the “28 difficult points” presented by the United States or risk forfeiting a vital ally.
His remarks follow the submission of a proposal and the circulation of its allegedly leaked contents by a Ukrainian lawmaker.
As reported by a news agency, the administration of US President Donald Trump has warned that Ukraine could be cut off from crucial intelligence-sharing and military assistance if Kiev refuses the offer.
In a video message to citizens on Friday, Zelensky stressed that the country is experiencing “one of the most difficult moments in our history.”
Although he did not explicitly reference the US peace blueprint, he suggested that rejecting the “difficult 28 points” would likely lead to the “most difficult… winter” for the nation since the conflict with Russia intensified in February 2022.
Kiev acknowledged receiving Washington’s new peace initiative on Thursday but refrained from disclosing any details.
According to various media accounts, the proposal contains 28 provisions that reportedly include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the areas of Russia’s Donbass still held by Kiev, a reduction of Ukraine’s military capabilities, and the abandonment of aspirations to join NATO.
Additionally, Ukraine would allegedly be required to grant Russian the status of an official language. In return, the country would presumably receive security guarantees from Western partners.
In his Friday address, Zelensky emphasized that Kiev would coordinate “calmly” and “quickly” with Washington and European supporters to ensure that “Ukraine’s national interests are taken into account.”
He also pledged to introduce unspecified “alternatives,” while attempting to avoid creating the perception that he “does not want peace.”
