Ten Confirmed Dead as 5.7-Magnitude Quake Rocks Bangladesh
(MENAFN) A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, claiming at least 10 lives—including four in the capital Dhaka—and injuring more than 350 people across the country, officials reported.
The epicenter was located in Narsingdi district, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Mohammad Anwar Hossain, district magistrate and deputy commissioner of Narsingdi, told media that five people died in the central district, with over a hundred others injured.
In Dhaka, a railing collapse at a five-story building in the Bangshal neighborhood killed three, while another person died when a building collapsed in the Mughdha area, according to a statement from the office of interim head Muhammad Yunus. At least 14 buildings were damaged in the capital.
Over 250 people were injured in a garment factory hub in Gazipur district when panicked workers rushed to seek safety, the statement said. A child was also killed in central Narayanganj, and 24 others were injured.
The tremor struck at 10:38 a.m. local time (0438 GMT) and lasted only a few seconds. Residents in Dhaka fled buildings and homes, taking refuge on streets as the ground shook.
“The earthquake has caused casualties in various districts of the country, including house collapses and other accidents,” the statement added.
Yunus expressed deep shock and sorrow over the losses, noting that the government is monitoring the situation closely and efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage.
The local fire department reported that seven buildings were damaged or affected by the quake in and around Dhaka, with at least one person injured.
The earthquake was also felt in parts of neighboring India.
