China, Zambia, Tanzania Join Forces to Revive TAZARA Railway

(MENAFN) China, Zambia, and Tanzania formalized a landmark $1.4 billion pact on Thursday aimed at revitalizing the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) railway line.

The 1,860-kilometer (1,155-mile) route linking Tanzania and Zambia was originally constructed by China in the 1970s to support copper exports and facilitate fuel imports via Tanzania.

The signing took place in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital, during a visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

The ceremony, which also included Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Tanzanian Vice-President Emmanuel Nchimbi, marked the official groundbreaking for TAZARA's rehabilitation.

Premier Li emphasized that TAZARA exemplifies China’s dedication to advancing infrastructure modernization with its African partners, noting that "TAZARA is a signature project, ushering in a new era of development and prosperity for Tanzania, Zambia, and China."

President Hichilema highlighted the strategic importance of the TAZARA corridor, describing it as key to transforming Africa’s second-largest copper producer into a regional transport and logistics hub that encourages trade, investment, and employment opportunities.

"This agreement will improve TAZARA's integrity and capability. We see the TAZARA as more than just a railway line; it is an important economic corridor," Hichilema added.

Tanzanian Vice-President Nchimbi stated: "The project will strengthen trade corridors and boost imports and exports to further integrate the region's economies."
