Dozens Go Missing After Vessel Overturns in DR Congo

(MENAFN) Roughly 70 individuals remain unaccounted for after a vessel overturned on a river in Kasai Province, situated in the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local media reported Wednesday.

The vessel had been traveling toward the capital, Kinshasa, departing from the port of Bena Dibele—over 800 kilometers (497 miles) distant—when it went down Monday in the Sankuru River due to powerful whirlwinds, according to a media outlet.

“The boat was carrying roughly 120 people. About 50 have been rescued so far, and search efforts continue for those missing,” the report noted, quoting local administrator Francois Ahoka.

Ahoka emphasized the obstacles faced by rescue crews and urged families to maintain contact with regional officials to assist in identifying survivors and recovered remains.

Waterborne travel is widespread in Congo because many roads are largely inaccessible.
