Slovakia Adamant It Will Send Arms to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico has again underscored that his government will not deliver lethal weapons to Ukraine, reaffirming the policy during a Tuesday meeting, according to an official statement.

The stance was conveyed at a working dinner in Bratislava with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the Slovak government said.

Fico stressed that his government retains full autonomy over “what pace and what structure of military spending it chooses,” emphasizing Slovakia’s sovereign decision-making authority.

During the talks, he urged Rutte to bolster Slovakia’s air-defense capabilities, calling it a strategic priority amid regional tensions.

The statement noted that both sides reviewed developments in Ukraine, with Fico repeating that Slovakia will not send lethal arms to Kyiv except under existing commercial contracts. Non-lethal assistance, however, will continue.

Earlier in October, Slovakia delivered its first non-lethal defense package to Ukraine since Fico returned to office in 2023.
