Poland restores two Belarus border crossings amid improved relations

(MENAFN) Poland has reopened two border crossings with Belarus that had been closed in recent years amid deteriorating bilateral relations, local media reported Monday.

The crossings, Kuznica and Bobrowniki in northeastern Poland, were reopened after authorities “secured the border,” where large numbers of migrants had attempted to enter Poland, according to broadcaster citing the Interior Ministry.

Kuznica was closed in November 2021 over Belarus allegedly attempting to push hundreds of migrants across the border, while Bobrowniki was shut in February 2023 after a Belarusian court sentenced Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut to prison.

Polish officials said they consulted local authorities and business owners, who had long advocated restoring at least one road link to Belarus. In October, Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggested the reopening would occur “on a trial basis” and in coordination with Lithuania.

Until now, only the Terespol–Brest crossing had been open to passenger traffic. Under the new arrangements, the Kuznica–Bruzgi crossing will handle passenger vehicles only, excluding buses, while Bobrowniki–Bierestovitsa will permit cars, buses, and freight vehicles.
