Marburg Virus Claims Three Lives in Ethiopia

(MENAFN) The Ethiopian Ministry of Health on Monday verified that three people have succumbed to the Marburg virus disease.

Speaking at a press briefing, Ethiopian Minister of Health Mekdes Daba stated 17 suspected cases underwent testing, with three returning positive results.

While six individuals displaying viral symptoms have perished, laboratory verification was achieved only for the three confirmed cases, the minister explained.

Daba reported that the East African nation currently has no active Marburg cases, with coordinated operations now focused on tracing and quarantining potential virus exposures.

On Friday, the Ethiopian government acknowledged a Marburg virus disease outbreak in Jinka town in southern Ethiopia, following laboratory analysis of samples from a cluster of suspected viral hemorrhagic fever cases.

The outbreak marks the country's first recorded instance of the disease.

The Marburg virus, a highly contagious pathogen with an elevated mortality rate, triggers hemorrhagic fever. Symptoms, including high fever and severe headache, typically manifest within a week of exposure. It belongs to the same virus family as Ebola, according to the World Health Organization.
