Egypt Firmly Rejects Efforts to Divide Sudan, Says Foreign Minister
(MENAFN) Egypt has issued a firm rejection of any efforts to fragment Sudan or destabilize the conflict-torn nation, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced Monday following a telephone call with Sudanese counterpart Mohieldin Salim.
In a statement from Egypt's foreign ministry, Abdelatty reinforced his government's unwavering commitment to preserving Sudan's sovereignty, territorial boundaries, and state institutions.
The minister once again denounced what the statement described as recent "horrifying atrocities and grave violations" unfolding in El Fasher, the capital city of Sudan's North Darfur State.
Addressing Sudan's deepening humanitarian emergency, Abdelatty advocated for creating a functional humanitarian corridor while scaling up emergency aid and strengthening partnerships with the UN, the African Union, and international relief organizations, the statement indicated.
Abdelatty further emphasized the need to consolidate international efforts toward securing a comprehensive cessation of hostilities and launching an all-encompassing political dialogue in Sudan that addresses the population's demands for safety, stability, and economic progress, according to the statement.
Salim's remarks during the discussion were not disclosed.
On Oct. 26, Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced it had overtaken the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) command center in the blockaded city of El Fasher—representing a critical shift in Sudan's thirty-month civil conflict that has escalated concerns about deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
Sudanese authorities subsequently reported that more than 2,000 civilians had been killed by RSF combatants following their takeover of the city, allegations the RSF has rejected. On Oct. 30, the UN Security Council condemned the RSF's offensive on El Fasher and "its devastating impact on the civilian population." The council also denounced "reported atrocities perpetrated by the RSF," including summary executions and arbitrary detentions.
