Dhaka Court Sentences Former Premier Sheikh Hasina

(MENAFN) A court in Dhaka on Monday handed Bangladesh’s fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the death penalty, determining her culpable for "crimes against humanity" committed during last year’s large-scale protests against her administration.

Under tight security, the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal issued the ruling in absentia, as Hasina is currently in India.

The court declared that Hasina was responsible for "crimes against humanity" and described her as the “superior commander of all the atrocities.”

"The crimes happened in her (Sheikh Hasina’s) cool knowledge," the three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, stated in the 453-page judgement.

“All the conditions of being a case of crimes against humanity were proved” in her trial, the court added.

Among those also sentenced to death is former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who remains outside Bangladesh.

Hasina and her associates have the right to appeal the verdict in person before the highest court within the next 30 days.
