Finland Kicks Off Major Artillery Firing Exercise Near Russia
(MENAFN) Finland kicked off its large-scale artillery drill, Northern Strike 225, on Monday in Rovajarvi, eastern Lapland, according to media.
The operation brings together 2,200 troops — including a contingent from Poland — and roughly 500 pieces of military equipment.
“The exercise combines tactical and operational firepower and practices the integration of allied capabilities,” said the exercise leader, Kimmo Ruotsalainen.
He emphasized that the training is the “most significant” artillery and mortar firing exercise in Northern Finland for conscripts and confirmed it will run through November 25.
Designed to assess how the Finnish Army’s artillery functions in harsh early-winter conditions, the drill takes place in Rovajarvi, the country’s primary artillery testing ground and the largest such range in Western Europe. The site lies about 100 kilometers from the Russian border.
Finland entered NATO in April 2023, ending decades of military non-alignment amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Since joining the alliance, Helsinki has bolstered defenses along its eastern frontier and increased its focus on cybersecurity and counterintelligence.
